Srinagar, Apr 10 (KNO): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers on Thursday staged protests in Srinagar and Jammu against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders for what they called “intimidating” the lone party legislator—Mehraj Malik. Several AAP workers were detained by police in Srinagar during a demonstration held in support of the MLA Doda Mehraj Malik. The AAP workers, according to details gathered by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)—alleged that Malik was harassed during the recently concluded Assembly Session for raising public welfare issues. In Jammu, Malik himself led the protest and accused BJP and PDP leaders of attempting to intimidate him. “They want to silence me because I speak for the people, but I will not succumb,” he told the gathering. Meanwhile, in Srinagar, AAP workers assembled at the Press Colony here, raising slogans in support of Malik and holding placards. Police intervened, stopping the protest midway and detaining several demonstrators. An AAP member told reporters that Malik represents the common people’s voice in the Assembly, adding that any attempt to “suppress him is an attack” on democratic rights. Separately, a police complaint was filed against Malik on Wednesday over alleged remarks made by him against a former J&K Chief Minister.—(KNO)
