CBI condoles demise of its former Dir Dr Ashwani Kumar| KNO

Srinagar, Oct 08 (KNO): Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday expressed anguish over the demise of Dr. Ashwani Kumar, former Director, CBI. According to a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), CBI extended its deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to give the family the strength and fortitude to bear their loss at this time of great sorrow. Rishi Kumar Shukla, Director, CBI has said "Our heartfelt emotions are with the bereaved family in this moment of profound tragedy. May his soul rest in peace". Dr. Ashwani Kumar, an IPS officer of the 1973 batch (Himachal Pradesh cadre) took over as the Director of CBI on 02.08.2008 and retired on 30.11.2010. He was the 24th Director of CBI after its formation in 1963. Before joining as Director, CBI, Dr. Ashwani Kumar was Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh for over two years. During his tenure of six years from 2001-2006 as Joint Director & Additional Director in CBI, Dr. Ashwani Kumar had worked as Joint Director (North) looking after the States of Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Rajasthan, U.P. and M.P. He also worked as Joint Director, Policy, Coordination and Interpol. Later, he was elevated to the rank of Additional Director and was given the charge of the Anti-corruption Wing. While in the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Dr. Ashwani Kumar held the post of IG & DIG Vigilance, Shimla from 1995 till 2000. Before that, he was DIG, CID and DIG Range, Shimla from 1991 onwards. He was the District Superintendent of Police in Shimla, Solan, Lahaul and Spiti. He also held the posts of Deputy Director and Assistant Director in the Special Protection Group, New Delhi from 1985 to 1990. Born on 15th November, 1950, Dr. Ashwani Kumar completed PhD, Post Graduate in Business Administration, Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources and Post Graduate Degree in Defence Studies. Dr. Ashwani Kumar was decorated with Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1989 and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1999. He had also received Special Duty Medal with Bar for his services in 1979 and 1980 besides appreciation from the Prime Minister of India, Union Home Minister and the Minister of State (Personnel & Public Grievances). Dr. Ashwani Kumar served as Governor of Nagaland from 21st March, 2013 to 27th June, 2014 and also took additional charge of Governor of Manipur from 23rd July, 2013 to 31st December, 2013. After retirement, Dr. Kumar devoted his time in the field of academics and taught Management Studies. A condolence meeting is being organized today at CBI, HQ, New Delhi—(KNO)
