Srinagar, Jan 16 (KNO): In a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir, young Soft Tennis player Mohammad Qais (Under-18) from Srinagar has been selected to represent India at the 2nd Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship 2026, scheduled to be held next month. Qais’s selection has been hailed as a major achievement for the region and reflects the growing sports talent emerging from Jammu and Kashmir. The young athlete has shown remarkable consistency at various levels, earning accolades for his performances over the years. Mohammad Qais is a three-time Gold Medalist at the District Srinagar level and has also clinched three Gold Medals at the Union Territory level. He has previously represented Jammu and Kashmir (UT) at the National level, competing against top players from across the country. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Mohammad Qais termed his selection as a dream come true. "It is an honour to be selected to represent India at the Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship. I have worked very hard for this moment and will give my best to perform well at the international level,” he said. Qias said discipline, consistency, and self-belief have played a vital role in his journey so far. "Regular practice and dedication are the keys to success in sports. Every match helps me learn and improve,” he added. He expressed gratitude to sports bodies and mentors for their constant support. "I am thankful to the Amateur J&K Soft Tennis Association, especially its founder, Dr Gh Hassan, Mr Bilal, Mr Shakir Ashraf (General Secretary), Mr Firdous, Mr Basit, and others for providing me guidance and opportunities. I am also grateful to the Amateur Soft Tennis Federation of India for their support,” he said. Qais’s father expressed pride over his son’s achievement, calling it a result of years of hard work and perseverance. "We come from a modest background, and seeing my son represent India is a moment of immense pride for our family. He has remained focused despite challenges and never gave up on his dream,” he told KNO. He urged authorities to strengthen sports infrastructure and support young athletes in the region. "There is no shortage of talent in Jammu and Kashmir. With proper facilities and encouragement, many youngsters can excel at the national and international levels,” he added.
