Snowfall: Majority of roads cleared in South Kashmir, say officials | KNO

Efforts on to restore remaining roads, over 90% power supply restored

Srinagar, Dec 28 (KNO): Majority of the roads in South Kashmir that witnessed heavy snowfall have been restored even as the efforts are on to restore the remaining roads. People from different areas of South Kashmir told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the main roads have been cleared while the majority of internal roads are yet to be cleared. They, however, said that there are many places where power supply has been affected, which is yet to be restored. They demanded immediate intervention of higher ups in this regard. Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom, told KNO that snow clearance machinery was mobilized immediately after the snowfall began accumulating yesterday. “Clearance operations continued throughout the night, and priority 1 and priory 2 roads in the district have been cleared,” Dr. Qayoom said. He added that due to continued snowfall, some roads required multiple clearances. Teams from the Mechanical Engineering Department (MED), Roads and Buildings (R&B), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and Urban Local Bodies have been working tirelessly to restore internal road connectivity. He said that internal roads, lanes and by-lanes are being cleared while all 33 KV lines have been restored. He further added that 130 11Kv lines out of 138 have been restored while pending restoration work is under progress. “Majority of WSS schemes functional, isolated disruptions being attended to and clearance will continue throughout evening till mid-night,” he added. An official from PDD Awantipora told KNO that 99 per cent of the power supply in the division has been restored while the rest is being cleared. Executive Engineer PDD Shopian, Er Gowhar Ahmad Jan told KNO that out of 50 feeders, 48 have been restored fully while two have been restored partially and efforts are on to restore them completely. Another official from the district told KNO that the majority of the roads in Shopian district have been cleared while pending roads are being restored. Officials from Anantnag and Kulgam district told KNO that around 90 per cent of roads, mainly priority 1 and 2 roads, have been cleared while the remaining roads are being cleared. Regarding the electricity status, Superintending Engineer Anantnag and Kulgam circle Nisar Ahmad Lone told KNO that all feeders have been restored in the district Anantnag district and supply is being restored in every village. He said that 63 feeders against 72 have been restored in Kulgam and efforts are on to restore pending feeders and supply—(KNO)
