Srinagar, Aug 25 (KNO): Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Tuesday recalled the 1989 “Operation Jamia Masjid” at Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid, saying the scars of the incident still remain 37 years later. In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a spokesperson said that in a post on X, Mirwaiz recalled the incident and said, Jama Masjid Srinagar has stood through assaults, sieges, closures and repeated attempts to silence its pulpit. On this day in 1989, during ‘Operation Jamia Masjid’, its sanctity was violated, worshippers were detained and its sacred space desecrated. “Thirty-seven years on, the scars remain. Yet Jama Masjid continues to stand, as Kashmir’s spiritual heart, a witness to its history and a voice for the faith, dignity and rights of its people.” Mirwaiz said the historic Jama Masjid continues to remain an enduring symbol of faith and resilience, deeply connected with the religious, social and public life of the people of Kashmir.—(KNO)
