Srinagar, Jan 30 (KNO): The imposition of an entry fee at Srinagar International Airport has sparked outrage among locals, who describe it as an unfair burden on commuters and a “forced tax.” Passengers and vehicle operators told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that every vehicle, whether private or commercial, is charged ₹40 at the entry gate, regardless of whether they park or simply drop off passengers. Locals have termed this practice unjust and exploitative. “There is no separate lane for entry and parking. Once you cross the gate, you are forced to pay, even if you leave immediately,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a resident who frequently visits the airport. Additionally, locals argue that no visible signboards warn commuters about the charge, leading to confusion and frustration. “What if someone leaves home without money or a phone, just to pick up a relative? Where will they go if they are stopped at the exit?” questioned Owais, a Srinagar resident. Tourism operators have also criticized the policy, stating that it negatively impacts visitors and adds unnecessary costs. They have urged authorities to abolish the fee to prevent further inconvenience to travelers. When contacted, Srinagar Airport Director Javed Anjum told KNO that the charge applies only after 14 minutes of parking. He stated that if there are complaints of unjust charges, passengers should lodge a formal complaint so that appropriate action can be taken. “We have taken note of this matter, and it will be investigated. If any violations are found, the guilty will be held accountable,” he said—(KNO)
