Srinagar, Jan 02 (KNO): Bilkees Ara, a mother of three and an ASHA worker, fondly known as the 'Blood Woman of Kashmir' has become a symbol of selflessness and service, donating her 38th pint of blood till date, with a courageous, compassionate and a relentless commitment of journey to saving lives. In an interview with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Bilkees said she started her mission on June 23, 2012, when her cousin needed an urgent blood transfusion. She was referred from Baramulla Hospital to LD Hospital in Srinagar. "Initially hesitant and fearful about the consequences of blood donation, I took the leap of faith. I was scared, thinking it might cost me my life, but it turned out to be a life-saving act for my cousin,” she recalls. Ara said the experience of blood donation ignited a deep sense of purpose within her and, being a mother herself, she understood the struggles women face, especially during childbirth. "This empathy became the driving force behind my mission to donate blood and save lives during emergencies," she said. A lifeline for the needy Over the years, Bilkees has become an indispensable figure in north Kashmir’s healthcare landscape. From accident victims to pregnant women, she has extended her lifeline to countless individuals across the valley. “Whenever I receive SOS calls from SKIMS, SMHS or any other hospital, I activate my group members. We ensure someone reaches the hospital, no matter the hour,” she said. As the Women’s Wing President of Red Drop, a 20-year-old NGO based in Srinagar, Bilkees has mobilised resources and people to build a robust network of blood donors. Her dedication has saved lives and earned her the admiration of her community. A legacy of love and service One of the most touching moments in her journey is being recognised by a child in her neighbourhood. “Whenever I visit the village for census duties, a child points at me and says, ‘She’s Bilkees Di, who saved our mother,’” she shared with pride. For Bilkees, this recognition is not about fame but a testament to her purpose — serving humanity and pleasing Allah. “Whatever I do is to make my hereafter better,” she said. Support at home Behind every extraordinary woman is a supportive family. For Bilkees, her husband, a government employee, has been her pillar of strength. “His encouragement helps me touch the skies,” she said. "His unwavering support has enabled me to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to her cause." Bilkees’s message is clear and compelling: blood donation is not a sacrifice but a lifesaving gift. She urges others, especially women, to overcome their fears and step forward. “It doesn’t cost one’s life, but it can save a precious one,” she said—(KNO)
