Srinagar, Oct 30 (KNO): Noted neurologist Dr Sushil Razdan has stressed the critical importance of stroke prevention and early intervention. In a conversation with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Razdan said that strokes, the third leading cause of death globally following heart disease and cancer, are also a major contributor to disability. He identified the lack of physical activity as a significant risk factor contributing to the rising incidence of strokes among young individuals. Other factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking. When questioned about the available infrastructure at the peripheral level, Dr Sushil mentioned the pivotal role of stroke units in hospitals. These units have significantly improved stroke management through techniques such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy, he said. “Thrombolysis involves medications or minimally invasive procedures to break up blood clots and prevent the formation of new ones, while thrombectomy is a surgical procedure to remove blood clots from blood vessels,” he said, adding that both methods are crucial in restoring proper blood flow, preventing life-threatening situations. Dr Razdan said that strokes can be prevented through regular physical activity, quitting smoking, and managing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. He underlined the potential for prevention and cure if patients seek medical attention promptly. “People must adopt a healthy lifestyle by consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, reducing salt intake, and avoiding fast food. These lifestyle changes can significantly lower the risk of strokes, enhancing overall well-being and longevity,” the neurologist advised—(KNO)
