Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Ganderbal, Tariq Ahmad, while talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said the department launched a massive market checking campaign last year during which 111 cases were registered against the traders who were found violating various sections of the Legal Metrology Act. A fine of Rs 2,24,800 was recovered from the erring shopkeepers, Tariq said, adding that the violators were found across different business establishments and outlets including LPG dealers, vegetable, fruit, mutton and poultry sellers, and petrol pumps. Four petrol pumps were penalised for violating various legal metrology laws, he added. The department also redressed various complaints which were received against traders indulging in overcharging and pasting inflated MRP stickers on the products, the officer said, adding, “Our field staff is on toes to intensify market checking to prevent any unfair trade practices.” He appealed to the general public to be “more vigilant” while making purchases and said bills must be preserved for settlement of their claims in the future—(KNO)
