Srinagar, Mar 27 (KNO): The Kashmir valley has witnessed a high demand for mutton this Ramadan with an estimated consumption worth over Rs 252 crore for the holy month of fasting so far, revealed the data. The data, as exclusively accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), states that around 1,400 trucks loaded with sheep arrived in the Valley this month. It states that in the last week alone, 60 to 70 trucks were transported, while in the first 24 days of Ramadan, 30 to 35 trucks arrived daily. “Each truck carried approximately 150 sheep, with each sheep priced accordingly.” A mutton dealer from Srinagar told KNO that the stock remained available throughout the month, and the demand was strong. He said that compared to the previous year, the market conditions were favorable, with steady sales and good returns for suppliers. Speaking with KNO, Mehraj Ud Din, General Secretary of the All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association, said that this Ramadan, the stock of mutton was good and available throughout the year. “The stock was sufficient for the whole month, and there was a minor disturbance in arrivals when the road was closed for a few days at the beginning of the month,” said Mehraj, adding that stock was available in the Valley and no shortage of mutton occurred during the month. He also said that the high consumption of mutton during Ramadan reflects the continued preference for meat in Kashmiri households, despite steady prices—(KNO)
