Gulmarg, Aug 13 (KNO): The Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) conducted a major cleanliness drive at the popular tourist destination on Tuesday to make the area plastic and polythene-free.
This initiative was led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Waseem Raja who said the GDA is committed to preserving Gulmarg's natural beauty and promoting sustainable tourism.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) highlighted the importance of collective efforts in this mission. He said several organisations, including the Rotary Club, NLCO, and Bilaliya Educational Institute, have partnered with the GDA to support the cause.

Waseem further announced that the next phase of the campaign would focus on Phases I and II of the Gulmarg Gondola, where efforts will be intensified. To maintain momentum, he said that cleanliness drives would be conducted weekly. He urged local shopkeepers and hoteliers to switch from plastic to more sustainable alternatives, such as glass bottles, to further reduce the environmental impact.
"This is not just the responsibility of the GDA or the Municipal Committee; it requires a joint effort from everyone in the community. Together, we can preserve Gulmarg’s pristine environment for future generations," Raja said.
During the drive, the GDA CEO appealed to both residents and tourists to actively participate in maintaining the cleanliness and natural beauty of Gulmarg. He acknowledged the critical role played by various stakeholders, including the Municipal Committee, local police, represented by PS Gulmarg SHO, and members of the media, in supporting the initiative.
The students from Bilaliya Educational Institute played an active role in the drive by volunteering their time and energy to the cause.
