Srinagar, Sep 10 (KNO): In a surprising turn of events amidst the election atmosphere, a PhD scholar from Dangerpora Sopore has announced his candidacy for the upcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Feroz Khursheed, who holds a PhD in English and is an Islamic scholar, said he wants to bring "much-needed change" to the region. He criticised the current state of key sectors like education, health and horticulture, saying they have been neglected due to a lack of effective leadership. "Sopore has been ignored for 30 years. There is a complete leadership vacuum, and I have never seen our so-called leaders raise the grievances of the people in the assembly," he said. Feroz said that educated individuals face challenges due to the failures of past leaders. "Many PhD holders have been forced into menial jobs. These scholars are making a living on carts — a clear sign of the failure of past leadership," he said. Khursheed disclosed that while several political parties had offered him a mandate, he chose to contest as an independent candidate due to their "history of betraying the people". "They have always oppressed the people, jailed youth and increased unemployment. How can I be part of that?" he said. Rejecting the practice of voting for money, Feroz urged the people not to fall into the traps set by the parties that have governed Sopore for the past three decades. "Those who have ruled must be held accountable. The people deserve leaders who will genuinely fight for their needs and development," he asserted—(KNO)
