Handwara, Jan 20 (KNO): Authorities in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Saturday said that 10 percent of the work on the much-anticipated Government Medical College (GMC) in Handwara has been completed. They said rigorous quality control measures are strictly followed in the construction that began last year.
A team from the executing agency, R&B division Handwara, headed by Executive Engineer Farooq Ahmad, conducted a thorough review of the ongoing work at Government Medical College (GMC) in Chougal.
Presently, the college is partially operational from District Hospital Handwara and a privately rented building.
Executive Engineer Farooq Ahmad, speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the establishment of GMC at Chougal is a significant initiative by the government of Jammu & Kashmir, with a budget of 255 crore rupees.
The project involves the construction of 17 buildings, including administrative blocks and a 200-bedded associated hospital, Farooq said, adding that plans also include hostel facilities with four different blocks and separate residential quarters for principals, doctors and staff members.
“As of now, construction is ongoing for seven buildings simultaneously at the venue, with 10 percent of the work already completed. The engineering team is working around the clock to ensure timely completion within the next two years,” he said.
The Executive Engineer said the multicore project would greatly benefit the entire district’s general public. “It can cater to at least 2,000 patients daily once operational,” he said.
The construction company involved in the project adheres to high standards and employs quality materials, he said, adding, “There will be no compromise on the quality of the project's execution.”—(KNO)
