Srinagar, Dec 10 (KNO): The Union Ministry of Heavy Industries Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that it has allotted three Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) buses for Jammu and Kashmir under the National Hydrogen Mission. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the ministry said that a total of 100 hydrogen fuel buses have been deployed across the country, including three in J&K. The deployment is aimed at promoting low-emission mobility and reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuels. The HFC buses operate on fuel cell technology, producing water as the only by-product. The ministry further informed the house that the government is supporting the adoption of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology under various R&D initiatives and pilot projects to assess feasibility in different terrains and climatic conditions, including high-altitude zones like J&K. The ministry however clarified that no formal assessment has yet been conducted to evaluate the impact of HFC buses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Union Territory. “Data collection and operational performance studies are underway across all deployment locations.” The National Hydrogen Mission aims to accelerate the use of green hydrogen in mobility, industry and energy sectors, with hydrogen-powered buses expected to play a future role in clean transportation—especially in environmentally sensitive regions like Jammu & Kashmir—(KNO)
