Srinagar, Jul 19 (KNO): In a decisive move to curb the alarming rise in road accidents, the Jammu and Kashmir Transport department has launched a special drive to identify and penalize habitual traffic violators across the region. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns raised by both the administration and the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, which, in a communication dated July 16, 2025, flagged the increasing number of road fatalities in the region and stressed the urgent need for corrective measures. According to a circular issued by the Transport Department, all Regional and Assistant Regional Transport Officers (RTOs/ARTOs) have been directed to act swiftly against repeat violators of the Motor Vehicles Act. “This drive is not only punitive but also preventive. Our goal is to deter dangerous and repeat traffic violations that put lives at risk,” a senior Transport Department official said. Officials confirmed that data on serial offenders is being compiled using surveillance systems and challan records. Several habitual violators have already been identified in multiple districts, and action will follow promptly. In addition to enforcement, authorities are also seeking public participation in identifying and reporting reckless drivers. “People’s cooperation is crucial. Every report helps us prevent another potential accident,” said an ARTO based in Jammu. The Transport Department has also directed regional offices to submit action-taken reports within a week, ensuring accountability and transparency in the implementation of the drive. This crackdown is part of a broader push for road safety in J&K, where reckless driving, over-speeding, and traffic norm violations have led to a disturbing rise in accidents and fatalities—(KNO)
