Srinagar, Dec 11 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir recorded 5,808 road accidents in 2024, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) informed Lok Sabha on Thursday. The ministry further informed that Ladakh registered 264 accidents. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the figures reveal that the road accidents in J&K have fluctuated over the last five years. J&K reported 4,860 accidents in 2020, 5,452 in 2021, 6,092 in 2022, 6,298 in 2023, and 5,808 in 2024,. The Ministry also said it has adopted a multi-pronged strategy focused on Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Care to reduce accidents nationwide. Measures include stricter penalties under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, mandatory road safety audits, rectification of black spots, vehicle safety upgrades, and a push for electronic enforcement on high-risk corridors. To encourage public assistance during emergencies, the Centre has strengthened legal protection for Good Samaritans, now termed “Rah-Veer,” offering Rs 25,000 reward per incident and shielding helpers from harassment or legal complications—(KNO)
