Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is all set to deliver his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) where he is expected to raise the Kashmir issue. According to reports, Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Pakistan's army chief General Raheel Sharif ahead of his speech at the UN and discussed the Kashmir situation and the tense relations with India after the terrorist attack in Uri on Sunday.
Sharif reprtedly raised the Kashmir issue with almost every world leader he has held talks with on the sidelines of UNGA sessions, but his efforst appeared to have gained no traction. Sharif raised the issue with the leaders of the US, the UK, Japan and Turkey and sought their intervention to resolve the matter.
Sharif had a plan to forcefully highlight the Kashmir violence on Wednesday night at UNGA address, but the scenario changed after Uri terrorist attack which spotlighted the issue of cross-border militancy.
"The prime minister might strike a balance in his speech. He would talks about the Indian atrocities in Kashmir but also would be conciliatory to end tension," said an official.
Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar summoned Pakistan High Commissioner over the Uri attack.
MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "We demand that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment of not allowing terror against India. Uri attack shows that terror machinery in Pakistan is still thriving. We have recovered a number of items like grenades with Pakistan mark, communication equipment and food and medicines made in Pakistan. Foreign Secy told the Pak High Commissioner that even now two encounters between terrorists and Indian army are underway at the border. This year beginning with Pathankot airbase attack there have been continuous attempts by terrorists to cross LOC and international borders."
