Gulmarg, Jan 12 (KNO): Ahead of Z-Morh tunnel inauguration, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that Sonamarg is all set to become a winter sports destination.
Talking to the reporters here in North Kashmir, Omar, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said, “Tomorrow PM Modi will inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel. It will provide all weather connectivity to Sonamarg and turn it into a winter sports destination.”
He said, "All arrangements are being put in place in connection with PM Modi's visit to Kashmir tomorrow."
Omar said. “I will try my best to ensure that in the next 5-years Sonamarg also becomes like Gulmarg and becomes another skiing destination in Kashmir.”
He said that tourism is the backbone of J&K’s economy.
“More tourists mean more earning for people. I have come to Gulmarg to record a program so that it helps in its promotion.”
Describing Gulmarg as the best winter sports destination in the country, Omar said, “It’s easily accessible to all and skiers love to come here.”
Pertinently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal District on Monday to inaugurate the 6.5 km long Z-Morh tunnel.
The tunnel project has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 2,700 crore. It comprises the Sonamarg main tunnel, an egress tunnel and approach roads. Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, it will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg enroute to Leh, bypassing landslide and avalanche routes and ensuring safer and uninterrupted access to the strategically critical Ladakh region.
Along with the Zojila Tunnel, set for completion by 2028, it will reduce the route length from 49 km to 43 km.
The Prime Minister will also meet the construction workers who have worked meticulously in the harshest conditions, acknowledging their contribution to this engineering feat—(KNO)
