Jamia Millia Islamia wins finals of 16th All India Vice-Chancellors T-20 Cricket Tournament | KNO

Srinagar, September 13 (KNO) : The 16th All India Vice-Chancellors T-20 Cricket Tournament concluded here at University of Kashmir on Thursday with Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University, Delhi lifting the title and defeating the University of Jammu by nine-wickets in the finals.

Wajahatullah khan Captain of the winning team lifted the winner’s trophy amid huge applause from the spectators. Batting first Jammu University set the target of 127 runs in 20 overs which JMI chased successfully in 15 overs with a loss of just one wicket. Mohammad Yousuf from JMI was declared man of the match for his brilliant knock of 53 runs whileas Wahid Ahmad from JMI was declared man of the series and best batsman of the series for scoring 394 runs during the tournament.

Fareed Ahmad from JMI was declared best bowler of the tournament. While felicitating the winning team of JMI and other players for their splendid performance during the tournament Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir who was chief guest on the occasion said “I congratulate both the teams -the winners as well as the runner up team for their performance during the tournament and reaching to the finals was never easy in a tournament where around 20 other teams were also participating.”

Terming the outstation teams as “ambassadors” Prof Talat said “I hope the participating teams who had come from different parts of the country would convey a positive message outside the valley and be our goodwill ambassadors which will help us in hosting and organizing more and more such national level tournaments.” While maintaining that the valley has huge potential in winter sports Prof Talat said “We have a huge potential as far as winter games are concerned and I would like to see the teams who played this national tournament here come again and again and also participate in winter games.”

The Vice chancellor said that he will make all efforts to strengthen the sports infrastructure in all campuses of the University. While presenting the awards to the players Chairman J&K Bank Mr Parvez Ahmad who was guest of honour on the occasion said “J&K Bank is and shall always be at the forefront of such activities which are aimed at shaping the career of the budding players in various sports.”

Ahmad who was highly impressed by the performance of the various cricketing teams during the tournament said “The talent which I witnessed today is tremendous and I will make sure that J&K Bank also has its own cricket team in future which will also give a chance to young and dynamic players to showcase their talent at various national and international forums.” The Chairman also rewarded the cultural wing of DSW University of Kashmir with a cash prize of rupees 25 thousand for live performing the KUMSA tarana.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Neelofer Khan Registrar and Dean College Development Council (DCDC) KU while congratulating the winning team appreciated the role of KUMSA for organizing such events in the University and said “participants from across the country will take positive messages from here to their places about Kashmir.”

Dean Academic Affairs KU Prof Musadiq Amin Sahaf and Dean Research KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi also felicitated the players with mementoes and trophies on the occasion While thanking the University administration for its support President KUMSA Qazi Ghulam Jeelani said around twenty teams representing various universities of the country participated in the mega event which was organized by Kashmir University Ministerial Staff Association (KUMSA) in collaboration with Directorate of Physical Education & Sports and sponsored by Jammu & Kashmir Bank Hazratbal.

Jeelani also requested University authorities and Chairman J&K bank to provide resources for the up gradation of two grounds of the University with facilities of flood lights and stadium so that international matches could be hosted at the University.

During the award ceremony various officials and departments of the University were felicitated for their support and cooperation in making the tournament successful.

Around 37 matches were played during the tournament and the teams who participated in the tournament included University of Kashmir, University of Mumbai; University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi; University of Jammu; Punjab University Chandigarh, Punjab University Patiala, S.P. Pune University, CUK Jammu, SKUAST-K, HPU Shimla, MPKV, Rahury, RTM Nagpur, Jalgaon University, University of Gorakhpur, PAU Ludhina, Shivaji University Kolapur, MDS University Ajmeer, , BOSE Ajmeer.
