Srinagar, Mar 22 (KNO): Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister Saturday expressed serious concern over the ongoing protests by daily wagers across the region. Despite the recent formation of a committee by the government to address their issues, Yaseen highlighted that the process is likely to take time. In the interim, he urged the government to immediately release the pending wages of all daily wagers working in various departments, including National Health Mission (NHM) and ASHA workers before Eid ul Fitr. In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Yaseen said daily wagers are the backbone of our essential services, and it is disheartening to see them protesting every day for their rightful dues. While the formation of a committee is a welcome step, it is imperative that the government provides immediate financial relief until the committee submits its report," he said. Yaseen further emphasized the need for fair compensation, stating, "Daily wagers should be given minimum wages in line with the Union Territory standards, as is the practice in other parts of the country. Ensuring timely wages is not just a matter of policy but a commitment to the dignity and well-being of these hardworking individuals." The senior PDF leader also urged the administration led by CM Omar to prioritize this issue on a top priority basis. He stressed that daily wagers have been suffering for too long, and it is the government's responsibility to ensure that their livelihoods are protected. Release their wagers before Eid ul Fitr, so that they can celebrate the festival happily. "CM Omar's government must take swift and concrete steps to resolve this matter without any further delay. The delay in releasing wages is causing immense hardship to thousands of families who are already grappling with financial constraints," he added. The former minister pointed out that sectors such as health, sanitation, and public services heavily depend on daily wagers, and any disruption in their livelihoods could have far-reaching consequences. He appealed to the government to demonstrate empathy and take a humane approach towards resolving their grievances. "Our daily wagers are not asking for luxuries; they are demanding what is rightfully theirs. Immediate release of pending wages and implementation of minimum wage standards must be treated as a top priority. The government must show its commitment to social justice by acting decisively," Yaseen added—(KNO)
