Srinagar, Nov 02 (KNO): All eyes will be on Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi tomorrow as he is set to announce his decision to resign from the Lok Sabha during a rally in central Kashmir's Budgam district.
Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Ruhullah said he would resign from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
"I will resign from the Lok Sabha tomorrow," he said.
Ruhullah is set to quit both the National Conference and the Lok Sabha over differences with the party on issues including Article 370 and other emotive matters.
A three-time MLA from the Budgam Assembly segment, Ruhullah won the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat in 2024 by defeating PDP candidate Waheed Ur Rehman Para by a record margin of 1.88 lakh votes.
Ruhullah, who catapulted to the centre stage of Jammu and Kashmir politics for his outspoken stand on Article 370, also played a key role in the National Conference's victories in the 2024 Assembly elections.
The MP is known for his strong advocacy of issues related to Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir's political rights, and reservation policy.
With Ruhullah's resignation, the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will fall vacant, necessitating a by-election within six months. The bypoll is likely to witness a direct contest between Ruhullah and the National Conference, although other political players are also expected to enter the fray—(KNO)
