Udhampur, Apr 20 (KNO): At least nineteen people died and several others injured after a passenger bus skidded off the road in Kagort village of Ramnagar's Udhampur district on Monday, officials said. An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that soon after the incident, police, rescue teams and locals rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. He said at least 19 people have died in the incident, while several others sustained injuries. "The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment," he added. DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma said there is a very sharp curve at the spot. "The driver may have lost control while negotiatin gthe sharp curve. The vehicle hit a parapet and rolled down into the gorge," he said. On whether the vehicle was overloaded, he said it is a matter of investigation. Meanwhile, PM Modi, in a post on X, expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. "Pained to hear about the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," he said. He also announced Rs 2 lakh relief for the family members of those who died in the accident and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said that in the tragic road accident, 16 persons have died on the spot, while several others have sustained serious injuries. "Rescue and evacuation operations are underway with teams from Police, SDRF and district administration on site. The injured are being shifted to GMC Udhampur for urgent medical treatment. I and my office are in constant touch," he added. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the incident, saying, "My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. May God grant them strength. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. I have directed the district administration, Police, SDRF and Health Department to provide every possible assistance to those affected." Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep sorrow, stating that the government stands firmly with the victims and their families in this hour of grief and that all necessary assistance is being extended—(KNO)
